RHODE ISLAND is the smallest state of the nation. But is home to more than twenty percent of the nation's historical landmarks. There is over four hundred miles of coastline, and consists of over thirty tiny islands including Hope and Despair. Although mainly industrialized, the chief destinations are, Providence, the colonial college town, Block Island popular for its beaches and Newport, yachting capital of the world, with its excellent beaches and extravagant mansions. The rest of Rhode Island is largely made up of sleepy small towns and fishing ports.
