Recife is a mixture of modern skyscrapers and beautiful old churches, affluence and abject poverty, and an inordinate amount of crime, but tourists are attracted to the colonial majesty of Olinda that is 6km north of town and Boa Viagem on the southern side and its sunny beaches.

 Long distance buses stop at the remote Rodoviária, from where the Metro (over-ground rail link) takes passengers to the city centre and drops them at Estação Central, the old train station, and taxis carry passengers from here to their destinations. Local buses stop at Santo Antônio Central Island on Avenida Dantas Barreto. Shared taxis (mini vans) provide lifts at reasonable prices to most destinations.
