Munich is a city of art and culture. It has innumerable monuments, more than is share of great museums than any other city in Germany, plus architectural treasures, historical sites, world-class shops, restaurants, and hotels. The overall feeling that makes the city so special is the open-air markets, the parks, and the beer halls and the abundance of lederhosen and oompah bands. Tourists flock to Munich year-round, for the various festivals especially Fasching, and Oktoberfest.

The best way to explore Munich is by walking because of the vast pedestrian zone. Bicycles are a convenient means of transport and are allowed on the S-bahn (except during peak hours). Car rental is available but parking in is nerve wracking and not cheap. Your best bet is to use public transport, which is excellent.

Munich's International Airport, Fluhafen München is located 28 km (17 mi) northeast of the city center. A fast train service links the airport with Munich's main train station. Other transport is the bus service, which can be rather slow. A taxi from the airport can take up to an hour during peak times.
