For over 850 years Moscow has been the heart of the land, spiritually, politically, and strategically. It still is, and reflects changing circumstances in brash new buildings, but also restores its past with careful repair of its ancient buildings.

 Rail links, bus routes and passenger boats on the canals all connect Moscow with the rest of the country. Buses, trolleybuses and trams are available, as well as the Metro Rail system. Taxis are freely available.

Moscow has five airports, all 30 to 40km (19 to 25mi) from the city centre. Sheremetevo-2 airport hosts international flights from outside Russia.
