Blessed with a natural splendor undetected by time or commerce, is home to high-tech marine habitats and luxurious resorts. Captivating white-sand beaches, pine forests, and rugged coastline and the deep green forests of Monterey cypress are just some of the tourist attractions. Modern-day attractions include the Monterey Jazz Festival and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary -- the nation's largest undersea canyon, bigger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The sanctuary supports a rich brew of marine life, from fat, barking sea lions to tiny, plantlike anemones.

A shuttle operates each year from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day and takes passengers to and from the aquarium and other waterfront attractions. Car rental is available but parking is difficult in downtown Monterey. Monterey-Salinas Transit provides frequent service between the peninsula's towns and many major sightseeing spots and shopping areas.

Monterey Peninsula Airport is 3 miles east of Monterey. Some hotels offer a free airport shuttle service to and from the airport. Taxis are available to take you to your destination. Several national car-rental companies have airport locations.
