Minneapolis was founded in 1855, on the west bank of the Mississippi river making for a large amount of riverboat traffic. Miles and miles of a climate-controlled skyway system enables residents and visitors to do everything from park and shop to work and dine without stepping outdoors in the often-harsh winters. It is a cultural centre with museums, universities, and theatres. There is a strong Scandinavian strain in the city. Surrounding south Minneapolis’ is the ‘chain of lakes’ with miles of bicycle and jogging paths.

Minneapolis is laid out on a grid system. Having an extensive skyway system is a blessing in winter making it easy to explore downtown areas by car or foot. But you'll need a car to reach many attractions outside downtown. The Metropolitan Transit Commission operates a bus system. Car rentals and taxis are available.

The airport is located 26km (16 miles) south of Minneapolis with 2 terminals. The Metropolitan Transit Commission runs buses to the citiy. Airport Express runs vans to many hotels. A taxi and car rental is also available transport to and from the city.
