| MICHIGAN is where one thinks in terms of cars, heavy industry and the city of Detroit. Or, one could focus on its magnificent scenery. The beaches, dunes and cliffs along the shoreline of its two dissimilar peninsulas, compete with many other oceanfront states. In the west, Lake Michigan shoreline passes through adorable little ports before reaching the stunning Sleeping Bear Dunes and to resort towns such as Traverse City in the peninsula's northwest corner. The desolate, and thinly populated Upper Peninsula, separated by the lakes Superior and Michigan, is very different from the cosmopolitan south.
