Memphis is a city known throughout the world as the birthplace of the most important musical styles of the 20th century. Downtown is the historical Beale Street which is the city's main entertainment district. The Overton Square area is midtown's most active district and is the site of several good restaurants, nightclubs, and antiques stores. Its wide avenues and numerous shopping malls characterize East Memphis. Today one can still see the Old-fashioned paddle wheelers steam upriver.

The city is spread out, so getting around can be confusing and frustrating at first but the streets are well marked, and there's plenty of parking. Memphis Area Transit operates citywide bus service and Trolley cars operate on a circular route stopping at various destinations. Otherwise car rental and taxis are available.

Memphis International Airport, located 9 miles southeast of downtown, is served by most major airlines and is a hub for Northwest Airlines. None of the car rental companies have offices in the airport itself, you’ll have to take a shuttle van from the car drop-off point to the airport terminal. Taxi services are also available.
