Since the time of the Nile steamers in the nineteenth century people have been drawn to Luxor and its relics of eons past. Today tourism accounts for most of Luxor’s economy and visitors are hassled at every step of the way with vendors of various goods or services. It is worth putting up with this inconvenience as the city serves as a base for exploration of the surrounding sites and attractions along the Nile Valley.

Luxor train station is located on Sharia al-Mahatta, and the bus station is located just north of the Luxor Temple. Although most places in Luxor are within walking distance there are taxis and minibuses that provide transport. Feluccas provide river transport.

Luxor Airport is located 6km/4miles east of the city and hosts international flights. There are buses available for transport to town, but it is advisable to use the taxi service. Car rental is available.
