In 1924 rows of identical dwellings were built to house labourers from the pineapple plantations. In 2004 very little has changed in the Lilliputian ‘city’ of LaNA’I and the simple plantation cottages still stand with bright colourful gardens, tall pine trees still tower over the town, and the island is still just as beautiful as it ever was.

Free shuttle buses ply the rudimentary roads of Lanai ferrying guest to the three hotels in Lanai. There is a car rental outlet based at Lana’i City Service on Lana'i Avenue, which also provides the only taxi service (if there is a vehicle available). Mountain bikes and horses are possibly the next best option to renting a 4 X 4 vehicle. If you are coming to Lana’i by boat a shuttle bus will meet the ferry to take you to your hotel.
