| KENTUCKY, where rival presidents of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, were both born here. Its rugged beauty is at its most tempting in the mountainous east and the small historic towns of the Bluegrass Downs, with its thoroughbred horses, bluegrass music and the large variety of bourbon whiskey distilleries, is always worth a visit. Louisville, home of the Kentucky Derby, is a busy manufacturing and arts centre; the more tranquil town of Lexington, eighty miles east, has a major horse-breeding market.
