| A land born of fire and ice where active volcanoes spew molten lava and great inexorable glaciers carve out a surreal landscape. Great stretches of black lava, gushing geysers and hot bubbling geothermal springs, and the stench of red sulphur filling the air gave rise to the belief that Iceland’s strange interior was the gateway to Satan’s domain. Not all of this land of the Viking is so hellish though, and the fjords and lakes of Iceland are breathtakingly beautiful, the air is clean and the rivers filled with salmon.
