The bustle of the seven million people living and working in this high-rise tightly packed pulsating metropolis is what makes a visit here so thrilling, and the wonderful tranquility of its temples and gardens so soothing. Having recently ended a hundred years of British rule, the contrasting western and Chinese influences are beautiful bewildering contradictions that weave an intricate multi-cultural pattern. At night Hong Kong blazes with neon and glitz, offering every kind of entertainment sort by man.

Public transport in Hong Kong is generally fast, cheap and efficient, with metered taxis, an extensive bus service, and trains, including the Trans-Siberian Railway with links from Europe to Beijing and on to Hong Kong. Car rental companies do exist, but only the very brave should consider driving in Hong Kong. For a cheaper, faster and much more fun option Hong Kong ferries offer great views of the harbour, and the Hoverferries are even an even speedier form of getting around.

Chek Lap Kok International airport on Lantau Island was opened in 1998 and offers an excellent air service and fares that are surprisingly reasonable.
