Built on extinct volcanoes Edinburgh Castle watches over Scotland's capital city. Edinburgh is filled with historic and literary association to name a few: Mary Queen of Scots, Robert Louis Stevenson, Alexander Graham Bell, and Bonnie Prince Charlie are all part of its past. Large gardens and greenery are prevalent features of central Edinburgh. Conspicuous from Princes Street is the Arthur's Seat, mountain. There are spectacular buildings, whose grandeur adds to the surroundings. Sunsets are spectacularly romantic; Scots call the fading evening light the "gloaming."

Because of its narrow lanes, you can only explore in any depth on foot. Bicycles can be rented but isn't a good idea due to the high ridges and terraces. But exploring the flatter countryside is perfect. Taxis or buses, which will be best method of transport, are available.

Edinburgh Airport is 6 miles (10km) west of the centre, receiving flights from within the British Isles and the rest of Europe. . A bus makes the trip from the airport to the city every 10 minutes; the trip takes about 25 minutes. A taxi into the city will depend on traffic, and the ride will be about 25 minutes.
