Detroit is one of the Midwest's oldest cities, birthplace of the automobile and the Motown sound. Its is one of the world's busiest inland ports, various vessels ranging from ocean-going freighters to private yachts dock in the city's protected harbour. Detroit offers world-class museums, theatres, and galleries, a well-run park system, extensive recreational and sports opportunities, and lively ethnic neighbourhoods full of friendly people and good restaurants. Vacant downtown buildings, are being replaced by new sports stadiums, posh hotels, and casinos.

Referred to as Motor City. Locals all have cars, The Department of Transportation operates bus service throughout the city but is not very tourist friendly. The elevated People Mover and buses fan out across the city. To reach attractions outside the city and the suburbs, it's best to rent a car or make use of a taxi.

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is in Romulus, about 26 miles west of Detroit. It's served by most major airlines. Commuter Express runs buses from the airport to major hotels. Taxis from the airport take about 45 minutes. Car rental is also available.
