Situated on the Tennessee River and surrounded on three sides by forested plateaus, Chattanooga was founded as a trading post in 1815, and later in the Civil War its strategic location made it the starting point of Sherman’s march through Georgia. Today people use Chattanooga as a base for climbing the green and beautiful Smokey Mountains, fishing for bass, hang-gliding, and exploring caves.
