home > Egypt > Cairo

Situated between the immense Pyramids of Giza and the great brooding Mosque of Mohammed Ali, Cairo is a vast city of ancient heritage. The animation of Cairo is seen in its paradoxes where trades that date back to mediaeval times are still carried out, but art deco suburbs exist, and donkey carts vie with limos for possession of the streets.

Rameses Train Station is located in an undesirable neighbourhood and most passengers immediately transfer to the metro or catch a taxi or bus to their destination. The old Sinai Bus Terminal located 4km from the city centre hosts buses from Israel, Jordan and Sinai. Transport around the city is provided by taxis, buses and mini-buses.

Cairo International Airport has two terminals about 3km away from each other, Terminal 1 (the old airport) hosts Egyptian, Arab, African and Eastern European airlines, and Terminal 2 (the new airport) is used by Western European, East Asian and Gulf airlines. Buses, taxis and mini-buses provide transport to town.
