Struggling to overcome the early 1960’s label ‘Johannesburg of America’, because of the brutality of its police force, Birmingham has ironed out its troubled race relationships under the eye of Richard Arrington, the city’s black mayor who has served for five terms since 1979. With the potential of becoming the next Atlanta, Birmingham is determinedly striving for this goal.

Public Transport in Birmingham is not the best and it is best to hire a vehicle from one of the car rental agencies. The train station is situated at 1819 Morris Avenue and is served by Amtrak, and the Greyhound Bus Station is at 19th Street N, between 6th and 7th Avenues. Yellow Cabs also operate in Birmingham.

Birmingham International Airport is Alabama’s biggest airport and serves the Greater Birmingham area as well as surrounding Southeastern cities. It is located 4.5 miles from the city centre and hosts nearly 160 flights to and from major cities in the United States.
