Situated in the Para state, on the river Para, Belem is gateway to the mighty Amazon and a city of both towering skyscrapers and colonial charm with churches and tree lined squares from the nineteenth century.

 

Commercial shipping, cruise liners, and seafarers use Belem as a port of call; with river boats most of the transportation on the rivers, but buses and taxis are available.
 

Aeropuerto Internacional Val de Cans Airport situated north of the city host domestic flights from Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities, as well as International planes. A bus and taxi service exists for passengers to Belem.
