To fully experience Athens is to understand the soul of Greece: ancient monuments surviving in a sea of cement, startling beauty amid squalor, tradition and progress side by side. Take the time to explore, and you will discover pockets of incomparable charm. Athens is a mixture of Middle Eastern and Western cultures. A must see is the Parthenon and the superb statues and vases in the National Archaeological Museum. Underneath the confusion and modern clutter lies the Mediterranean warmth that can be most appealing.

Most of the attractions are within a small area so it is easy to walk everywhere, though parked cars sometimes obstruct sidewalks. The price of public transportation can be expensive. Various bus companies travel to different destinations. Car rental is available but the drive can be nerve wrecking and parking is hard to find.

Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International is location 27km northeast of the city centre. Buses, trolley buses, and the metro rail connect the airport to the city. Taxis and various car rental companies are stationed at the airport.
