Although set within wild surroundings it is an energetic, multinational city with first-rate restaurants, shops, entertainment, and world-class sporting events. Tourist attractions are the wildlife, Native handicrafts, and hiking or trail walks, which begins downtown through to the scenic Cook Inlet. Moose and bear are expected sightings in downtown Anchorage or on the Coastal Trails that rims the lake, which is laden with salmon. Sled dog races are still a well-regarded event, The grid plan was laid out with military precision and streets and avenues run exactly east-west and north-south, with numbers along the first axis and letters of the alphabet or Alaska place-names along the other.

Available transport is car hire, taxis, or buses. It's probably wisest to rent a car if you plan on doing any serious sightseeing, but the municipal People Mover bus system covers Anchorage and is free within central Anchorage. Good street bikes are often for rent near Elderberry Park downtown.

Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport. The airport is situated 3km (2 miles) south of Anchorage city centre. There are 2 Terminals. Serving more than 15 international and domestic airlines. A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals and the car hire area every 15 minutes. Transport from the Airport is via car hire, taxis and a bus service. Weather permitting.
